A Family Story That Has Been Growing for Years

Some photography sessions feel a little more special because there is already a history behind the people standing in front of your camera.

Today's Heuvelman family photography session at Scheig Center & Gardens in Appleton, Wisconsin was one of those sessions.

I've known Melissa for decades, and I've also had the pleasure of photographing the Heuvelmans' older daughter's senior pictures in the past. So getting the opportunity to photograph their family together today was such a fun continuation of that relationship.

It's one of the things I love most about being a photographer — watching families grow and getting invited back to document the next chapter.

From Senior Pictures to Family Photos

A few years ago, I photographed the Heuvelmans' older daughter for her senior portraits.

Today, I was behind the camera again, but this time with the whole family.

There's something pretty special about seeing how much can change between photography sessions.

Kids grow.

Families change.

New memories are made.

And suddenly, the photographs you took years ago become part of a much bigger family story.

Being trusted to photograph those different seasons is something I never take for granted.

A Beautiful Appleton Family Session

For today's session, we headed to Scheig Center & Gardens in Appleton, WI.

The gardens provided a beautiful outdoor setting for the Heuvelman family's portraits, with plenty of natural surroundings and opportunities for everyone to relax and enjoy the session.

And that's exactly what I want family photography to feel like.

Relaxed. Natural. Fun.

You don't have to spend the entire session perfectly posed and looking directly at the camera.

Some of my favorite photographs happen when families are simply interacting with each other.

The Moments Between the Poses

Of course, we always want those classic family portraits.

The ones where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling.

But then there are the moments in between.

The laughs.

The hugs.

The little conversations.

The expressions that happen naturally.

The way parents look at their kids when they don't realize anyone is watching.

Those moments tell so much more of the story.

My goal with family photography is to create a gallery that gives you both — beautiful portraits to display in your home and genuine moments that remind you exactly what this season of life felt like.

Photographing Families Through Different Seasons

One of the greatest compliments a photographer can receive is when a family comes back.

I've had the privilege of photographing the Heuvelman family through different milestones, beginning with their daughter's senior portraits and now continuing with family photographs.

That's what makes photography so meaningful to me.

I'm not just showing up with a camera.

I'm getting to know families.

I'm watching their children grow.

I'm learning their personalities.

And I'm documenting pieces of their lives that become more valuable with time.

Why Family Photography Matters

It's easy to think we'll remember what our families look like at this age.

But life moves quickly.

The kids grow.

Their personalities change.

The little details that seem so ordinary today eventually become the things you miss the most.

How small they were.

The way they smiled.

The way they stood next to you.

The way everyone fit together.

Photography gives you a way to hold onto those moments.

Not just the perfect ones.

The real ones.
